College-Level Job Training Program Placement
G.E.D. Exam Preparation and Testing
College/Training Admissions Application Assistance:
Did you know job openings for individuals with at least a college-level certificate or an Associates degree are expected to increase faster than those requiring a Bachelor's degree? E.O.C. staff provides clients with comprehensive assistance to help them decide which college-level training program is best suited for their career needs. Our advisors will assess clients' career interests and help match them with the appropriate college or training program. Staff also assists clients in locating evening and weekend programs that best suit clients' schedules. E.O.C. staff will assist the client in completing admissions applications and guide the client through the steps necessary for enrollment.
Financial Aid Assistance:
Over one million eligible youth and adults did not apply for financial aid in 2010. Do not be part of this group. The Federal Government provides up to $5,550 per year in Pell Grants to eligible clients to pursue college-level training. E.O.C. staff provides assistance in completing financial aid applications such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). Federal Pell Grants and TAP Awards do not have to be repaid.
G.E.D. Exam Preparation and Testing:
Clients without their high school diploma or equivalency will have an opportunity to earn the General Education Development (G.E.D.) equivalency during our intensive 16-week G.E.D. program. Two 16-week cycles are offered during the course of the year. All G.E.D. subjects are covered, and there is special emphasis on the Mathematics and Language Arts – Writing sections of the exam. Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 10:00AM to 4:30PM. Clients who complete the program will then be ready to enter an appropiate college-level training program.
Math Tutoring:
Walk-in math tutoring is available for clients who have taken the GED math section and scored a minimum of 380. Participants’ math skills are assessed and an individual tutoring program is developed to address the specific areas where improvement is needed. Math tutoring is held Monday through Thursday from 2:30PM – 5:30PM.
Career Counseling:
E.O.C. advisors administer career assessments, such as the Strong Interest Inventory, and online measurements, to help clients identify their career interests. The results of these assessments will be used to help the client choose the college-level training program that matches their career interests. E.O.C. advisors will also discuss the skills that need to be developed to access good paying, stable jobs in high demand fields. E.O.C. advisors will use New York City job forecasts to help clients decide the career areas that can lead to good pay and job security.
Academic Advising:
For clients that are already in a post-secondary education program, E.O.C. advisors can assist in the selection of classes that align with the client’s major or course of study. This advisement can help students avoid taking classes that are not part of their academic program, saving both time and financial aid eligibility.
